Artisan Landscapes
A note on this one: this is a past client, written up from work already shot on their job sites — an example of what a showcase looks like. September's showcase is Curt's Canvas.
Introduction
Artisan Landscapes designs and builds outdoor living spaces across Charleston, Daniel Island, Mount Pleasant, Isle of Palms, Johns Island, and James Island. Design, hardscapes, irrigation, lighting, drainage, maintenance and mosquito management — Joel Dodd founded it and still oversees the projects himself. The part worth noticing is a service they call Artisan Aftercare: the relationship is built to carry on past the install rather than ending when the invoice is paid. Plenty of landscapers hand you a bill and drive off. Staying responsible for how a garden looks in a year means being proud enough of the install to want your name still on it.
The Project
This month's showcase follows a full backyard build in Hobcaw: grading, hardscape, planting beds, and a finished outdoor living layout built from the ground up.
The Work
Coverage included ground-level walkthroughs of the finished space alongside drone passes that show how the whole property ties together — something a phone camera at eye level can't capture.
The People
Every one of these projects comes down to a crew putting in the hours on-site in Charleston heat, getting grades and hardscape lines right before a single plant goes in the ground. Nobody sees that part. It's also the part that decides whether the yard still drains properly in three years — and drainage is a service they list, which tells you they've been called out to fix somebody else's.
The Craftsmanship
The details that make a backyard feel finished — clean hardscape lines, sightlines that were actually thought about, planting chosen for the space rather than for the truck — are easy to miss in a few photos and obvious the moment you walk it. That gap is the whole reason this section exists.
Why We Chose Them
Artisan's backyard work is some of the most visually complete coverage we shoot — full transformations with a genuine before and after. What earned them the spot is what sits behind it: a founder who still walks the projects, and an aftercare service that keeps them on the hook once the install is signed off. Anyone can make a yard look good on handover day. Caring how it looks a year later is the harder promise.
